[CHECHÉ]: Male-presenting, half-Cuban, half-American, early 40s. Santiago’s half-brother. He is from the North, and since he differs from the others in this way, he is often set against them in arguments. He advocates for mechanization and firing lectors, while the others see hand-rolling and lector-reading as the cornerstones of authentic cigar production. His wife, a Southern belle from Atlanta, left him for a different lector, so Cheché reviles all lectors and especially hates Juan Julian.

[OFELIA]: Female-presenting, Cuban, 50s, Santiago’s wife. Powerful and authoritative, plays a large role in running the factory when her husband’s gambling and drinking get in the way. Nonetheless, she is not at all a stern woman, but rather someone who enjoys fantasizing about a better life and indulging in romantic daydreaming.

[JUAN JULIAN]: Male-presenting, Cuban, 38, the handsome lector from Cuba that is hired to work for the factory. His choice to read the romantic and complex novel Anna Karenina at the factory for his debut, inspires a great degree of personal and interpersonal discord among the factory's workers.

[KATE]: 40, female-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Kate is the eldest sister, tight and prim. She is a schoolteacher and contributes the most to the family income. Respected by her sisters, she is clearly the head of the family. She feels that she is the only one who can hold everything together when the world is falling apart, which makes her a much more terrified person than her sisters; that terror is evident in every move she makes.

[MAGGIE]: 38, female-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Second eldest and chief homemaker. While Kate works outside the home, Maggie takes care of everything inside the home. Fun-loving, with a serious side, Maggie carries the defusing jokes when things become tense.

She and Rose take in knitting to help the family supplement their income. Agnes is patient and kind to Rose and is particularly suspicious of Chris’ beau, Gerry.

[ROSE]: 32, female-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. The fourth sister, Rose has a developmental disability as described in the script. Her main caretaker is Agnes with whom she is particularly close. Rose lives life with an openness that make her vulnerable and sees the world as she finds it. She helps Agnes with the knitting and is a delightful character.

[CHRISTINA]: 26, female-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. The youngest of the sisters, Chris has a child, Michael, out of wedlock. Her beau has a lust for adventure, quick money and travel and she is easily swept off her feet by his attentions. She is a good mother to young Michael, but her sisters often chide her carefree outlook. (Intimate moments required)

[GERRY]: 33, male-presenting, any race/ethnicity, nondisabled or disabled. Gerry is the wanderlust who breezes into the Mundy household between adventures.
